If you live in a state like Ohio, Florida, Wisconsin and others with one of the new
teabagger governors you have no doubt seen them trying to dismantle the unions, particularly for government workers. Republicans and their propaganda arm FOX "News" are trying to spread the idea that unions are greedy and evil. They would like you to think that unions are responsible for the sorry state of the economy today, and if only those pesky unions would go away, everything would be OK.
Michele Bachmann believes that the solution to our high unemployment is to
get rid of the Minimum Wage, one of the many benefits given to us by those pesky unions. Even if you don't belong to a union, organized labor is responsible for many of the things we take for granted today.
- Five day 40 hour work week.
- Overtime pay.
- Paid vacations and sick leave.
- Health, life, dental and vision insurance through your employer.
- Workplace safety standards.
- Child labor laws.
- Non-discrimination laws to protect women, older workers and minorities.
- Unemployment compensation.
- Scheduled breaks and lunches
- The right to collectively bargain with employers
Every one of these "perks" - and more - were fought for by unions. If John Kasich or Rick Scott or any Republican gets their way, these things will disappear, one by one. DON'T support the union-busting governors. Don't believe their lies.
